ABOUT DESIREE CORTEZ
I want to share a little bit about my history. I was born and raised in Venezuela, and since I was a kid, my dream was to learn English and travel around the world. I studied English as part of my primary and high school classes, but as a teenager I started taking English classes with two excellent professors that helped me speak the language.
Later, I went to college and graduated as an Electrical Engineering Technician and Bachelor in Education.
During my last semester of school, Schlumberger; an international company that offers oil services, went to recruit students in my college and I had the opportunity to be selected between 300 students to work internationally in the Westerngeco Marine segment as a Marine Positioning Specialist.
Westerngeco has seismic exploration vessels in different parts of the world, which made my dream come true to improve my English, travel, see exotic places and meet people from different cultures.
During that time, I started to feel interest for fitness. While I was working offshore, I was in a 5 week on 5 week off rotation. After finishing my shift while onboard I started going to the gym with frequency and I always felt good while exercising; I liked it, so when I came back home during my time off I bought my first workout DVD’s to do at home or while travelling.
After working for Schlumberger for almost 4 years, I felt very blessed for having accomplished many of the things I dreamed about as a teenager; so I decided to quit my job to serve and help others serving in voluntary work as a full time sister missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints.
I served in my country Venezuela, and it was a marvelous experience, I learned many things about service, developed attributes in my character that have helped me have success in many aspects of my life and I met wonderful people.
During my time as a sister missionary I still had interest for fitness, so I kept doing my training. Exercising was already a habit for me then and one of my favorite hobbies.
When I finished my mission, I decided to come back to my previous job so I travelled to Houston, Texas to renew a safety certification to work offshore. During that trip, I met Michael, my husband, with whom I fell in love deeply. We got married in the Caracas Venezuela Temple the following year, and I decided with his support to start a new profession in the fitness industry as a personal trainer. I got certified by the NASM, and then I did an internship as part of the program with a master trainer at Anytime Fitness Gym. It was there where I started to use my knowledge and where I heard for the first time about fitness competitions.
To see my body transforming little by little motivated me to start a career as a fitness competitor in May 2014 while I started working at the gym as a personal trainer. I started training harder, I was always skinny but I didn’t have muscular definition because until that point I’ve never
trained my muscles with enough intensity and volume or followed a diet properly to gain lean body mass.
I did the best I could everyday pushing myself beyond my limits and I developed physical and mental strength.
The diet to compete was the hardest because even when it was made of healthy foods, but it was more strict and exact than my regular diet, so for the first time I had to measure and adjust my macronutrients closely to obtain the results that allowed me to be ready for the stage the day of the competition.
It wasn’t easy, but I persevered and 1 year later, in May 2015 I did my first competition. I was amazed by my progress and I decided to continue participating in fitness contests. In August of that same year I competed again winning my first trophy as 2nd place in my category and I was hooked with the sport.
I took another year to prepare to the next one and I continue working at the gym, this time in another one called American Muscle Gym as a personal and group trainer. I participated then in the opening of a new gym called Maximum Core Fitness as a leading trainer where I had the opportunity to continue with my services and educate and guide my clients with nutrition and meal preparation seminars, training sessions and creating my first fitness class “Bootylicious” for women, inspired in my competition training.
The triumph of having my first trophy motivated me even more to continue training hard for the next and most recent competitions in November 2016 where I won my first overall championship which was amazing for me.
This is a summary of the events I have competed and the results.
- NPC Suplement Xpress International Championships, May 2015, 6th place.
- NPC Sun City Regionals, Aug 2015, 2nd place
- NPC East Texas Championships, Nov 2016, 1st place and overall champion.
- NSL 11 Fitsports Championships Pro Qualifier and Pro, Nov 2016, 1st place categories beach and athletic challenger. 2nd place categories beach and athletic elite.
